Adventures in moviegoing: A video store visit and "The Spy Who Dumped Me"

Last week I was at a local video store. Yes, I still go to video stores. Yes, I know this is an ancient quest, and that Blockbuster has died. Even with movies available for streaming and download, and on various services, I like the physicality of browsing among the disks, looking at the back covers, checking out the prices. While I could scroll through on-demand options and Netflix lists, I prefer strolling to scrolling. And I get to witness scenes like the one that day, where a man with what appeared to be his two grandsons was renting "Ready Player One" and letting the kids look around. "Pop-Pop," the younger one, who looked to be about 7, said, "which is the best Michael Myers movie?" How the kid knew the "Halloween" epics is beyond me. I had missed the announcement below when it appeared last week. And things have gotten interesting since the release, with Ruby Rose announcing that she is leaving "Batwoman " (where, in case you didn't know, she played Batwoman), forcing a recasting, Anyway, here are the network plans (and the odd spacing was in the release): The CW Network will officially launch its new season in January 2021 with its regularly scheduled series line-up, while loading up Fall 2020 with fresh original and acquired scripted series and alternative programming, it was announced today by Mark Pedowitz, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The CW Network. “ This year, The CW has made the proactive strategic decision to launch its new season in January 2021, rolling out a line-up of our signature returning series which will be joined next year by our four new series, including the return of the DC’s most iconic superhero in  SUPERMAN & LOIS , the return of the Texas Rangers in  WAL...

TV watching, so much TV watching

I still cruise the television offerings, though sometimes not for long. "Blood and Treasure," the CBS summer series, wasn't even worth finishing the first episode, a clumsily forced attempt at clever action. I managed to make it through one episode of Spectrum's "L.A.'s Finest," a gender-reversed visit to the "Bad Boys" formula, but one was enough; again, everything seemed to have been borrowed elsewhere, and not very well. I've seen a little more of the new Netflix-backed season of "Designated Survivor" ; it seems to be trying to be less of a thriller and more of a political tale (including via real-people documentary footage) but it's not very good at it -- at times a blatant reworking of things "The West Wing" did better. And I can say that from current memory, since I've been binge-watching "West Wing," with six seasons done and the seventh to go. The original flaws are still there -- the unk...
